How To Remove A Broken Cotter Pin
Tips for removing a stuck cotter pivot?
Breaking down an quondam Peugeot Core road bike to build back upwards in to something, not sure what nevertheless. Trying to remove the cotterred cranks. Only they are extremely stuck. Already belted the fuck out of them with a hammer and used a lot of oil. Any suggestions, willing to have crank collateral damage, but may as well endeavour and become them out without resorting to this.

Make sure to try penetrating oil. Loctite makes a product called Freeze and Release that lowers the temperature of a stuck bolt (should piece of work for cotter pins also) to try and become it out. Also attempt an acid like vinegar. Yous may also desire to just try drilling them out.

Cheers, my mum really did suggest using ice to shrink the pin. Will give that product a go. Drilling also sounds quite feasible.

It'due south probably too late, every bit yous must have mushroomed their tip, only for adjacent time:
-
but partially unscrew the nut. The thought is, you want to hammer the nut, not the screw
-
place a piece of tube betwixt the pivot's head and the ground, then that your hammer strikes are transmitted to the ground through the pipe, not through the subclass+frame+wheels.
-
lube them, of course.

I like your finesse, nonetheless the bike has been left in the elements for god knows how long, and the pins are well and truly stuck. Bought it of a hoarder. I call up drilling them out is my only option now that i had mangled the heads. I would like to keep the cranks and just supervene upon the pins because I don't mind the vintage style even so I demand to clean the rust off them. Vinegar and a light steel wool was suggested to me. Any thoughts on that? Thanks.

You've well-nigh likely messed upwardly the threads simply don't worry that'due south an piece of cake fix. Become get a boom punch and use that to push button the pin out. Lots of oil and heat the creepo upwards with a propane torch. Don't heat it to the signal where the pin starts to go hot. If this get this the pin out, become to everyone you know and ask if they have a tap and die set to help yous recut the threads. Or go to the store and buy the die you need. You lot tin can purchase only i and the handle thing instead of a whole set. Just clamp it in a vice and go along turning till you get to the lesser of the threads. After that you lot need to thread a new nut on with a wrench, you cant practise it by mitt, to help ascertain the threads since you didn't cut away the former ones. I've washed this twice with two different bikes. Likewise when pounding on a bolt or something with threads put a nut over the threads then you lot don't harm them

I Appreciate the advice unfortunately I got frustrated and cutting the whole crank off with a grinder. In retrospect I could have done these things. Enthusiasm for the project is starting to wayne, hopefully I get another burst of energy on it soon though.
